ALLEGED VIOLATION OF TREATY

Mr. Foster, in the Ottawa House of Commons, raised a debate upon the fact of the United States having seven, warships on the Great Lakes, in violation of the treaty of 1817, and thus having. Canada at the mercy of this formidable force. Sir’ Wilfrid Laurier deprecated the discussion in view of the correspondence now proceeding, s but admitted that there was cause for anxiety in the situation, due to individual American States bordering the lakes*, clamoring for a share of military expenditure, and this kind of difficulty must, he said, be met.
