A TRENCHANT CRITICISM

The Rev. John Mackenzie’s sermon at St. AndreAv’s Church on Sunday night severely criticised the condition of the volunteer force, stating that at the present time New Zealand Avas not prepared for Avar, and the volunteers of the force Avere entirely inadequate to the situation. There Avere many excellent men in the force, but there were cases Avliore the officers had not been trained, or had no capacity for leadership. In the ranks the discipline avus loose, and often there Avas no respect for authority at all, the result being fatal to efficiency. The force did not attract the best men, and people as a Avhole Avere not jiroud of the system, and' did not support it. It avus hoped the proposals now before the country Avould secure better results. He Avas a chaplain in the volunteer force, _ but spoke also Avith considerable service in the ranks before joining the ministry.
