A NARROW ESCAPE.

A young man, W. Hasler, had a-nar-row escape from drowning while bathing in tho river yesterday. He was an expert swimmer, having won many races in the Old Country. He dived off a boat after being in the water halt an hour. He was seized with cramp,and remembered nothing until he found himself in bed. A lad, Neilson. who was bathing with Hosier, saw the latter sink after ooming to the surface once or twice, and dived in after him. Others came to his assistance, and Hasler was brought ashore in an unconscious condition. Resuscitative work was applied for half an hour, and a lot of water pumped out of oiasler, who recovered. TWO DROWNING FATALITIES. PAHIATUA, Dec. 6. Oliver Johnstoue, about 25 years old, a single man and a rabbiter, was drowned 1 in the Aohanga river while crossing to Handyside’s, about nine last night. , , , . Ernest Cooling, ft shepherd and a single man, was drowned in the same rivor at' W&iota-ki ford about o’clock last night. Tho river was flooded on account of a heavy thunderstorm which occurred yesterday afternoon along tho Pu'ketoi range. A BATHING FATALITY. WELLINGTON, Dee. 6 Advice from Blenheim states that Arthur William Tolhurst, ftged 23, a native of New South Wales, was drowned while bathing in the Opawa nver. SUDDEN DEATH AT CHRIST- ■ CHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 6. A well-known business man of tins citv, Mr. William McCiea, draper, died' suddenly last night about 11. 0 clock. The deceased arrived in Christchurch aboiit 29 years ago.
