THE MANGARUHE FATALITY.

Re the drowning fatality reported on Saturday at Mangaruhe, the evidence showed that the -child was playing and fell in. Her mother pluckily jumped into the flooded river, and rescued the body a quarter of a mile from the scene of the accident. The parents are half-castes, and their grief was so great that they forgot to report to the police, who arrived as the body was about -to be buried. A verdict of accidental drowning 'was returned, with a rider drawing attention to the laxity of Natives in reporting sudden deaths. INQUEST AT PETONE. WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. At an inquest on the body of Edwin Cox, an old age pensioner, killed by a train at Petone, the evidence showed that deceased had ample warning, but apparently changed his mind about going over the crossing, and practically walked right into the engine. A verdict of, accidental death, and that the officials were not to blame, was returned.
ANOTHER ACETYLENE GAS ACCIDENT.
OAMARU, Dec. 7. A young man named Clias. Moss, a plumber met with a serious accident-to-day at the Waitaki High School by an explosion of acetylene gas. The room in which he was working was greatly damaged, and Moss suffered a fracture of the skull. He was '"’ken to the hospital and operated upon, ard is now progressing favorably.
