A STEAMER COLLISION.
[Pun J’iiknh Association.l AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. < • As the 'steamer Malieno was leaving jHohston street wharf for Sydney last night a boat on the starboard' side struck tho bridge of the steamer Koromiko. The boat was torn from the davits, and fell on to the deck. Part of the Koromiko bridge and part of the Mabeno’s railing, were earned away. ; A MONEY-LENDING C'ASE. In the money-lenndig case, Ellis, v. Oliphant and Battley, claim £lB 9s Bd, judgment was given for plaintiff for £l7 19s 2d. V Reverting to the money-lending case in the Supreme Court this morning, Judge Edwards said he did not desire to create any new practice. He would like time to consider the question of costs. This was a case involving the conduct of solicitors of the Court, but not in such a way as to suggest the necessity for any appeal to the powers of the Court in -that respect. He did not desire to suggest that. Ho had no desire to prejudice the character of defendants as solicitors. He' would have to consider how far that justified a Supreme Court acton where less than £SO was involved. HAWKE’S BAY RABBIT BOARD. , NAPIER. Dec. 7. The Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board today decided to resume control of the Weber rabbit-proof fence, and have it repaired where necessary. FEILDING CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. FEILDING, Dec. 8. The Chamber.of Commerce last night set up a holiday committee to decide all holidays for retailers except race days, which was the rock on which the last holiday committee was wrecked. WARRIMOO INQUIRY. WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. The evidence taken at the preliminary enquiry into tlie outbreak of fire on tlie steamer Warrimoo, at Dunedin, on tlie loth November, has been considered by tlie Marine. Department authorities, and it lias been decided that a magisterial inquiry into the occurrence shall be held. This will take place at Dunedin as soon as convenient arrangements with the magistrate can be- made, while the nautical assessors will be appointed at Wellington when the date of the inquiry is available. The Warrimoo is due back at Wellington from Sydney on the 15th inst. MORE IMMIGRANTS. One hundred and fifty-two passengers arrived bv the Papanui from London. including 45 assisteds, 24 nominated by relatives. Six of the new arrivals ano miners. / AN EXCEPTIONAL CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. S. The second coach from Otira for Broken River yesterday was delayed half an hour under exceptional circumstances. While the coach was at tlie top of Arthur’s Pass, 3000 feet above sea level, a passenger gave birth to a male infant. Tlie other passengers did all thev could for the mother. She and the infant were conveyed to the Bealey Hotel CONCERNING DEER HERDS. DUNEDIN, Dec. 8. Tho Council of the Acclimatisation Society, at a meeting yesterday, considered a proposal to. the Government bv Messrs Hard-castle' and 111 Hay and the Rev. W. C. Oliver, to place the North Otne;o deer herd under the management ot a board, on which tho Government should be represented. Alternativelv it was suggested that the present-dual control (by Otago and Waitaki Societies) be terminated. The Council passed a resolution strongly protesting against the course suggested, and expressed surprise at the arrogance and lack of courtesy in their approaching the Government while members of the' advisory com mil tee without consulting their colleagues, who bad no' knowledge of their intention. Tlie resolution further detailed steps by the Otago Society to conserve the herd, and concluded as follows: The Society further objects to the control of its deer herd being handed over to a board comprising persons from another province who have.shown little aptitude in the control, and management of their own herd.
