A DEPLORABLE MISTAKE

Charles GutJiringer, a Tammany politician of New York, entered a neighboring flat in mistake for his own, and the occupant, thinking he was a burglar, shot him dead. A REJECTED PETITION. The United States Supreme Court rejected the petition of Morse, cabled on October 12. He therefore serves the original 15 years’ sentence. - [The Federal Court had refused an appeal by Morse, the Ice King, who had been released on bail. He made £400.000 in Wall Street in four months, and paid a considerable portion of his debts.] * DRY WEATHER IN VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, Dec. 8. The continued dry weather i§ seriously affecting some country towns. A water famine prevails at Nowra. VICTORIAN OAT YIELD. The official report estimates the Victorian oat yield at 10,444,000 bushels, a decrease of 681,000 bushels. RABBITS IN VICTORIA. At a meeting of rabbit exporters it was announced that the number exported had decreased from over 10,000,000 in 1905 to 2,774,000 in the present year. At the same rate of decline tho Victorian trade would soon he a thing of the past. The chief cause was the preference shown for New South Wales rabbits, which were heavier and of better quality. NOT GUILTY. SYDNEY, Dec. 8. Byktor was found not guilty of manslaughter in connection with the death of Mr. Cox at tho Arcadia hotel, and was discharged. [Mr. Cox met his death through drinking water in his room at the hotel from a glass in which the previous occupant of the room had left some cyanide of potassium.]' PERILS OF THE AIR. PARIS, Dee. 7. Fernandez, an aviator, has been killed at Nice. A Petrol tank exploded when the machine was at a height of 320 feet. RETRENCHMENT IN AMERICA. NEW YORK, Dec. 7. The United States expenditure for 1911 is estimated at £146,444,615, £500,000 below the appropriations for the current year. THE ELLAN VANNIN. Deo. 7. Divers have discovered that the Elian Vannin .was completely broken in two amidships. There is.a hole loft wide, suggesting a collision. ;• AN ARTISTS’ FESTIVAL.: • LONDON, Dec. 7. The Royal Brtish Colonial Society of Artists is organising an exhibition of works of living colonial artists in connection with the Festival of Empire. The Earl of Plymouth, in denouncing the fact that such men as Morice (Canadian), Menpes, Lambert, and Bunny (Australians) had carved thenway to the very front ranks of British artists, hut that the atmosphere of Paris prevades their canvases, suggests that the exhibits at the Festival of Empire should show work- produced in the colonies, and instance the atmosphere of their particular homes, with which British art lovers are wholly unacquainted. A NEW DISEASE. ADELAIDE, Dec. 8; The Government bacteriologist has discovered the cause of the disease known as “dry bible,” responsible for an annual loss of many thousands of pounds’ worth of cattle.
