ALLEGED JEWELLERY THEFT

[Per Piikhs Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 8. A man named Diaz de Silva was arrested last night on a charge of the theft of. five ladies’ rings, valued atfrom Noah Cohen, at Wellington, in October. He was brought before the S.M. this morning-and remanded to Wellington.

A SERIOUS CHARGE.

FEILDING. Dec. 8. Leo Boronoff, an alleged Russian exile who has been lecturing in various parts of the Dominion on Russia, was arrested at Rongotea yesterday, and was brought before the Court here to-day charged with attempting to hav6 improper relations with a girl under 12 vears of age. He was remanded until Monday, bail being refused.

TINNED FRUIT AGAIN

BLENHEIM, Dec. 8. Yesterday Mrs. Scott Smith, wife o the local Magistrate, her daughter, and servant partook of tinned fruit for lunch. Soon afterwards they became ill, and a doctor beiug summoned, he stated the three women were RufFormg from ptomaine poisoning. The servant was removed to the hospital, me victims are bettor to-day, and will probably recover.

SUPREME COURT,

NELSON. Dec. 8

The Supreme Court session opened to-day before Air Justice Denniston. The judge said the calendar was fairly heavy for Kelson, four charges against four persons and four committals for sentence. For perjury with regard to the birth of a child, a man Was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. The judge said that sentence was of this nature as the prisoner was elderly and had borne a good character. Nevertheless, perjury was a serious offence, where the punishment as a rule should be deterrent. Isabella Dixon, daughter of .the previous prisoner, also came up for sentence on charges of false' declaration before the registrar of births, and perjury in a maintenance case against her husband. She was similarly dealt with on the ground of her previous good character. canterbury: art exhibition. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. The Canterbury Society ,of Arts today decided to hold their annual exhibition in March and April next vear. The receiving day was fixed for March 2nd;-. CANTERBURY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the committee , of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association to-day a letter was. received from the-Minister of Agriculture suggesting that somebody should be appointed by the Association to officially represent them and with whom the Minister could discuss .matters affecting the farming community and legislation with reference to agricultural and pastoral matters. It was decided, to appoint the Parliamentary members to .act in the capacity suggested by the Minister. Mr. J. D. Hall’s motion for the convening of a conference re the. frozen meat trade was agreed to.
