THE TRAWLER GOSFORD.
SUCCESSFUL TRIPS. » Yesterday afternoon, in response to an invitation,- a “Times” reporter, Avith a number of townspeople, went out in the Bay on the new trawler Gosford. The Gosford, with Captain Franks in command, left the wharf at 2 p.m., and proceeded out about two miles till off the Waikanae. The trawl was then let out, and steaming at about two knots an hour, a long -trawl in the direction of Young Nick’s Head was started. Arriving nearly opposite the head, the boat was put about, and when within two miles of the breakwater the trawl was taken in, after dragging for two hours. The haul, which, comprised about a dozen varieties of fish, was considered very fair, and would tie up into about 50 bundles. As this was the second trip of the Gosford during the day, the first trip in - the morning having resulted in 90 bundles being caught, a good day’s catch Avas attained. The Gosford marks a new epoch in the. trawling industry in Gisborne. She is 92ft long, 20ft - beam, and has a draught ,of \ Bft, the registered tonnage being 88 tons. At one time she Avas used for passenger traffic, so that ample room is afforded for her crew. A Speed of 11 knots can be' obtained by the -vessel, thus enabling her to take longer cruises and select the best grounds, so that in future the fish supply of Gisborne should be kept at a high standard. Yesterday afternoon the Gosford 1 was trawling in seven fathoms of water, and everything went smoothly under Captain Franks’ care, till the vessel Avas tied up at the Avliarf at 6 p.m., and the passengers were loud in their praises of the enjoyableness of the'trip.
