ATHLETICS.
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. A most attractive programme .of events has been arranged in connection •with the first annual sports meeting or the Gisborne High School, which is set down to take place at the Victoria ■Domain on Tuesday next, commencing at 1 p-m. The programme is a lengthy one. comprising running, walking, jumping, and cycling events, and a throwing the cricket ball competition. The ground is to be kept clear of all spectators There is a band to be in attendance, and a further addition to the pleasure of the afternoon will be the fact that afternoon tea will be provided on the grandstand. A number of invitations have issued, but a hearty invitation is issued to the general public to be present. Admission to the sports is free, and nothing but fine weather appears to be required to ensure a successful gathring NOTES. George Hackenschmidt, the famous “Russian' Lion” wrestler, is expected to reach Melbourne with nis troupe by the steamer Wiloannia on the 23rd inst. Particulars of the race between C. E. Holway, of Attleboro, Massachusetts, U.S.A., and Arthur Postle, of Queensland, decided at Springfield Park, Wigan, on Oct. 23, reached Sydney a week ago. Holway is oft- llfin. in height, and weighed 12st 81b. Postle is sft 10in., and turned the scale at list- 71b. Betting was 2 to 1 against Holway. Jack Hepplethwaite effected a perfect start. Postle led by nearly a yard' at 60 yards, and was also in front at the 100 yards mark, but in a great battle home Holway got up in time to win by a foot in yards inside evens.
