TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The East Coast Trades and Labor Council held their monthly meeting in Townley’s Hall on Saturday evening, Air. AV. Duncan (president) presiding. The question of loan proposals was brought up for its consideration. Crs. J. It.;Kirk and G. E. Dart-on were invited to lay their respective views before the delegates. •- Cr. J. It. Kirk wrote apologising at being unable to comply with the Council’s • request owing, to sickness. - Cr. Barton in being called upon to speak, stated that under the circumstances he would endeavor to lay before them the question of the loan proposals from both sides, in an impartial manner. He spoke at sohie length, •>.' } Several questions were put, and replied to. A'vote of thanks, to Cr. Barton was carried by acclamation. 1 .

- It was resolved that owing to ‘ the presure of business the discussion ot the loan proposals'he deferred to special meeting to be held on 1 r day next, to which all unionists will be. specially invited: A deputation from the Civil’Servant., and'Citizens’ Co-operative Bakery .avus received. Mr. C. F. Lewis explained in its entirety the full position, objects etc., of the institution, and strongly urged the unionists to give it support, stating in ans Aver to a question that the co-operative bakery, of which ho was president, had never been the instigators of an increase in the price bread. In fact, ho said, it was their institution that had actually kept doA\n the price. , c Mr. F. C. Fiddy, secretary or tne co-operative bakery, also spoke. After some discussion, it Avas unanimously agreed upon—“ That it is the duty of every unionist to uphold tne principle of true co-opcration as. a protnotion against the chief necessities ot life being monopolised by a few, to the detriment of the many.”
