Iu the Magistrate’s Court, Joseph Stove a young man, was sentenced to a month’s hard labor for failing to comply with an order to pay for the upkeep of his illegitimate child. lhe Magistrate commented upon the case strongly, as the girl had since gone out of lier mind, and is confined to an asylum. The child was committed to an industrial school. WELLINGTON INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL. WELLINGTON, Dec. 11.. The City Council held a special meeting to consider a demand from the Hospital Board for £5488 as the Council’s share (amounting t-o BS-100ths) of the cost of erecting an infectious diseases hospital, the tenders for which have been closed. The Mayor protested that the new hospital was too extravagant, and ithe demand on the Council was more than it could pay. It was resolved to refuse to pay. Tlio committee will consult with the Hospital. Trustees'. T ARTHURS PASS TUNNEL. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 11. Over 100 men are to be pnt on the Arthur’s Pass tunnel works after the end. of-the present year. A TOBACCONISTS’ ASSOCIATION. A Tobacconists’ Association has been formed here, and at the initial meeting a resolution affirming the desirableness of tobacconists being licensed was arrived at. It was decided to communicate with other centres. of tlie Dominion where no similar association is in existence, urging the formation thereof. PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNMENT LAND BILL. ~ . DUNEDIN, Dec. 11. The Trades’ Union passed a resolution protesting against the freehold proposal in the Government Land Bill, and expressing appreciation of the stand made bv leaseholders in Parliament.
