The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will be held at 7.30 p.m. today. The annual meeting of the Cook County Women’s Guild will be held in Townley’s Hall at 2.30 p.m. to-day. The monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board will be held at the Borough Council Chambers ati 7 p.m. to-day. Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., will probaly return t-o-day from his judicial visit to the Coast. There is a big list of cases awaiting his arrival, and he will endeavor to clear thejn off before the Christmas vacation. Yesterday morning an application was made by Mr. J. R. Kirk in the Magistrate’s Court for the re-hearing of the case Dr. Morrison v. Reginald Oswald Sheet, but was adjourned till this morning at 10.15 a.m. The two young champion billiardists, G- Gray and F. Lind rum, who are touring the Dominion, are expected to arrive in Gisborne this morning. Up to last night no arrangements had been made for any exhibition games to be played here. A oleasant function took place yesterday at Messr Clayton Bros.’ premises', when the foreman, Mr. T. Munro, was presented with a silver teakettle on the eve of his marriage with Mss Donovan. The presentation was made, on behalf of the firm’s employees, by Mr. E. Luttrell, and Mr. Monro suitably-'expressed his thanks. Shearing operations in the surrounding country districts have been considerably retarded by .the rain which has been experienced recently, and many of •the sheds will nob be “cut out” untd the New Year. A shearer from the Wjhatatutu district informed a “Times” reporter yesterday that during .six weeks work was only possible on nine days, and that the men were barely abie to meet their “tucker” bill. A pleasant little ceremony took place in the engineering works of Messrs J. J. Niven and Co. yesterday afternoon, when Mr. E. N. Kent, one of the firm’s employees, was presented with a 400-day clock, suitably inscribed. as a mark of esteem from his comrades, in view of his approaching marriage. The presentation was made by the foreman, Mr. K. H. Humphreys, who spoke of the esteem in which Mr. Rent was held, and wished him every happiness in the future. Messrs Jas. Brown (manager) and E. Muncey also wished Mr. Kent every ha-ppiness, both from themselves and from the men. Mr. Kent suitably responded. An adjourned meeting of the Civil Service and Citizens’ Co-operative Bakery, Ltd., was held in Townle.v’s Hall 1 st night, Mr. C .F. Lewis (chairman of directors) presiding. The meeting ■was in connection with the proposal to increase • the capital of the concern, by ‘ the issue of new shares. There was a very representative gathering of the different trades unions. A general discussion took place, those present expressing themselves as strongly in favor of supporting the bakery, and it was repprted that several new customers and shareholders had been secured ■as the result of a canvas. According to official figures, between 500 and 600 houses have been erccetod in the course of about five years, and in the last eight months 118 building permits have been issued. Jackson, responded to by Bro. T. G. Lawless, on. behalf of the Druids, Bro. Braddeley on behalf of the Hibernians, Bro. Geo.
