THE LOAN PROPOSALS.

MEETING OF RATEPAYERS.

A meeting of ratepayers in favor of the loan proposals was held in the Farmers’ Union rooms last night, to make arrangements to. assist in the carrying of the poll on Monday next. His Worship the Mayor presided, and sbout 30 gentlemen were present. The Mayor addressed the meeting at some length, giving explanations of points that had been raised by ratepayers hostile to the loans. ft was decided that all those present be formed into a committee, with power to add to their number, to assist in carrying the loan proposals to a successful issue. Mr. T. E. Toneycliffe was appointed chairman, and Mr. H. Miller secretary of the committee, and the following gentlemen were elected to the executive :—Messrs R. Johnston, W. Webb, J. Arundel, F. H. W. Traill, J. B. Ley don, C. G. Bloore, W. F. Crawford, I. S. Simson, D. J. Barry, P. Maher, and J, Brown. Mr. Frank Harris offered the executive the use of a private room, with the telephone installed, for their meetings, and a number of the gentlemen, present promised’to provide conveyances to bring the ratepayers to the polL on the 20tli inst. In addition, one gentleman guaranteed to collect £lO to pay for the hire of motor cars, if necessary. It was resolved that the separate districts, as laid out at the time of thejjjj borough election, be thoroughly canvassed. Copies of "The electoral roll were produced, and the meeting went .into committee to compile a list of the ratepayers known to be in favor of the loan proposals. - W It was subsequently decided that the iT Mayor should address a public meeting V of ratepayers from the balcony of the “Herald” office on Saturday night at 8 o’clock.
