BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), Crs. Kirk, Maynard, Darton, Somervell, Smith, Pettie, and Harris. An apology for abseij.ee, owing to a sudden call from home, was received from Cr. Clayton. Cr. Collins also sont notice of his inability to be present. Leave of absence was unanimously granted to the Councillors. A ‘letter was read from the County Council stating that notice of motion had been given in that body that Is per yard be the royalty charged upon all stone taken from the Patutahi quarry. Cr. Harris protested against such an extortionate charge being made. He suggested that representations be made to the Government on the matter. \ Cr. Darton pointed out that the matter was only a notice of motion given by one member of the County Council, and not yet even considered. The serious nature of the position wrist (referred to by Crs. Smitli and Pettie, and it was decided that a letter be sent to the County Council. reports: A number of reports, submitted "bv the various committees of the Council, and the particulars of which have already been published, wore read, and the suggestions contained in them adopted. —lnspector’s Report.— The Inspector (Mr. J. R. Little) reported as follows: —“Since last Council meeting I hate visited and inspected the following blocks, marked on plan, No. 21, 22, 23, 24. 25, 32, 34, 36, 37, Gisborne E., and 2 and 5, Haiti, and
1 16 and 20, AVhataupoko, and find same fairly satisfactory. Re the sealed pan svstem, I have to report that the work is now carried out m a satisfactory manner. From the Ist to the loth inst. there have been 0640 pans lifted, and dealt with, in 12 working nighiv showing an increase of over 240 the previous report for the same numbed of nights. This is satisfactory showing that the system m now in full working order. Health Report: I haTe tS report two cases of scarlet fever and two cases of typhoid fever, which have been notified m the borough, as per register The. report was adopted, on the motion of Cr. Kirk, who meved— That all householders be notified to take special orecautions to see that all yards cesspool's, drains, etc., are kept clean during the summer months, and that the Inspector be instructed to have the streets and water channels kept as free from refuse as possible. , . , Cr Pettie seconded the motion, which was agreed to. —Overseer’s Report.—
The Overseer (Mr. M. Morgan) reported as -follows: —“Meal: A start was made on Thursday, 9th to bring in metal from Patutaln, with the St raker waggons, 41 yards being oehvered to date, the Straker and trailer bringin nine yards per day. Gravel Pit- The river has caused a deal ot trouble of late, having been several times verv high, but things are notv working all right again, and gravel is coming to hand. In general street work, patching only is being done, the tarred blocks are being repaired, and general patching is being done with gravel. I have had the hay in the Carnarvon Street reserve cut, and it is now being stacked for punter use. I have also cut the grass m the AAaikanae reserve. This is not very g or of much use, but to clear the ground. It will do to top off the St The report was adopted. _ The Nightwatchman (Mr. A\ . i raser) reported that there had been no outbreaks of fire since the last meeting of the Council. Accounts amounting to £/Übs .f" were passed for payment and the meeting concluded at b.do p.m.
