CHILLIHG MEAT.
A LOCAL COMPANY’S ENTERPRISE.
In an effort to give their customers the best of meat, in the best of order, and to obviate the necessity of selling meat fresh killed, for consumption, the Gisborne Co-operative Meat Supply Co Ltd., have installed a commodious cooling chamber fitted with the most up-to-date apparatus! at their shop m Gladstone Road, lately occupied by Mr. J. Maynard. The room is 20ft- x 12ft. and is built into the brick wall and thoroughly insulated. The machinery used in connection with the cooling process is a British Linde 2-ton refrigerator which is driven by a five-horse power National gas engine. The compressor oa the refrigerator forces the ammonia through the coils inside the chamber, which are enclosed in a 2-toot partition. The compressed ammonia completes the circuit of coils and returns to a condenser, where it. is liquified and transmitted to a liquid receiver from where it again enters the ref rigerator compressor. A Blackman ran, at the rate of 1000 revolutions per minute, placed inside the partition containing the coils, forces a current or cold air around the pipes and through the chamber, which is usually kept at a temperature of 36 degrees. By this means a nice, dry, cool air, so necessary for the preservation of meat, is obtained. Although the plant is capable of freezing the meat placed in the chainher, such is not desired, the object being merely to chill the moat, which is thus kept better, th© flavor is not impaired in the slightest degree, and meat may he hung for some time before being delivered to consumers. Two hours’ running of the engine per day is sufficient to keep the chamber cool for over 24 hours, and meat can be kept perfectly fresh in it for over a month. The innovation will doubtless fill a long-felt want in connection with the local meat supply. Messrs J. J- Niven and Co. were the designers of the system, and supplied the plaiit. which was installed under the direction of the manager, Mr. J. Brown. Mr. J. Colley was the contractor for the building work.
