CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Cook County Charitable Aid Board was held last night. Present: The Mayor (in the chair), and Messrs J. R. Kirk, J. Maynard, J. Somervell, A. F. Matthews, G. Smith, F. Harris, Ay. Pettie. Several applications for relief were dealt with, and an application for admission to the home was granted conditionally upon the man taking out a prohibition order against liimself. The Society for the Protection of AVomen and Children forwarded a resolution to the effect that an inmate of the home was unfit to properly care for herself and child, and recommended that she be medically examined and sent to a mental hospital or rescue home, if neecssary. —The Clerk said that the matter was referred to in the Visiting Committee’s report.. The Visiting Committee reported a,s follows:—“Your committee have to report that during the month a woman was admitted to the old people’s home, and examined by the house surgeon of the hospital, who deems th* case suitable for an institution, but not a mental hospital. A former inmate was re-admitted, as he could not undertake the work he was endeavoring to do. A man from the Coast availed himself of the home for a week, and a man who is applying for admission was allowed in yesterday pending the decision of the. Board. A visit of inspection was made to the Home, and every, thing found satisfactory, except the drainage, which is constantly going wrong. A man was allowed a week’s rations, and another was given hoard, rations, and a fare to the Motu. A family have also been assisted to the extent of 10s per week in rations, pending the decision of the Board. Regarding a subsidy towards » qualified nurse at Motu, the secretary not being clear on the subject, an opinion was obtained from the solicitor, which we are sorry to say is not favoarble to the proposal.” . Messrs 'Chris© and Coleman advised that the Board could not safely make the payment of any moneys in its hands towards the expenses incurred by settlers in the Motu district in maintaining a nurse. It was decided to request the Salvation Army authorities to see if anything could be done for the woman mentioned in the report. The Custodian reported that at present there were 18 inmates in the Home, 15 men and 3 women. He acknowledged gifts from Messrs AAm. Pettie (4 sets of bowls), ISicholl, I eat Ld Friar, and Mrs. V. L. Kees. Mr. Pettie said that Messrs J. W. AVitty AV. 0. Skeet, and Captain Chrisp’ had shared in the presenting of the bowls. , , Alessrs iSomervell and Holden were appointed the Visiting Committee for the ensuing moTrth, and accounts amounting to £835 7s 10d were passed for navmeut. _ , ~ Mr. Kirk mentioned that the new Hospital Bill would make provision tor the Board to such payment towards the maintenance of .a nurse in the back country, as was at present impossible.
