The plethora of “coppers” on Saturday in connection with the hospital collection in Dunedin led to the perpetration of a joke on the part of a-stolid policeman. The “Otago Daily Times states that “Just a penny please! ■became a sort of battle-cry of the collector during the day. and, finding men so susceptible, one bold lady decided 'to try it on a policeman. us a copper,” she begged,_ and held tho box out in a line with his third tunic ■button. The big guardian of the peace eyed the box and the beggar. Gladly,” ho said; “gladly. But tell me, 'how am I going to get into that little box?”-
