THE VOLUNTEERS.

EAST COAST MOUNTED RIFLES. A Squadron parade of the East Coast Mounted Rifles took ; place at Ormond on Saturday afernoon. The Gisborne and Makauri troops mustered, at Waerenga-a-kikavat 2.30 p.m., and the Te Karaka troop at Ormond at the same hour. There was a fair muster. Captain Hellier Evans was in command). The troops met at Ormond, and then went to an adjacent paddock, where some useful and instructional field work was done. Corporal Coleman went through ..the practical part of his non-commissioned officer's examination. The squadron marched back to the Ormond Hotel, where at 6 p.m. dinner was served. Mr. C. Neenan nrovided an excellent dinner, and afterwards Captain Evans addressed the squadron, pointing out the effect that the new defence system would have on the corps. All present expressed their intention of enrolling in the territorial force. Later on a smoke concert was held at the hotel, and a very .pleasant time was spent.

GISBORNE RIFLES. On Saturday an afternoon’s shooting was put in at the Kaiti range by members of the Gisborne Rifles. The day was .fine for shooting and the firing was very satisfactory considering that only second-class shots Avcre competing. There were 22 shooting and three ranges were employed, 200, 300 and 500 yards. For each range a silver spoon was awarded as a trophy to the highest scorer with handicap added. The following are the ten highest aggregates' at each range:—

The five highest totals gained, including handicaps, were: Prvt. Beere 62, Col.-Sergt. Scott 57, Prvt. Perston 55, Prvt. Morgan 53, Prvt. McLean 49.
