The “Star’s’’ Taupo correspondent wires: A magnificent outburst of Ngarauhoe volcano occurred at 7 this morning.. A huge column of ashes and smoke was . ejected about 3000 feet. The volcano is now pouring out huge volumes of steam and ashes.
THE FEILDING PROTEST
EEILDING, Dec. 20.
In reply to the Feilding protest against the flag being half-mast at the post office for King Leopold, Sir Joseph Ward replied that the rule within British territory followed in accordance with the arrangement of the Imperial Government that flags on Government buildings bo flown on the death of a crowned head and on the day of the burial. AN EXCITED BANKRUPT. At a meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of W. B. Gesen to-day, there were lively soenes. A. M. Ongley, solicitor, and four creditors, were cross-examining the bankrupt, when the latter got excited, and! madet a declamation against the solicitor, and informed the District Official Assignee that he could not keep his temper with Mr. Ongley. It transpired that bankrupt’s wife leases three horses, one racing one being trained. The meeting passed a resolution, not unanimously, which was seconded by the solicitor representing the bankrupt, and also a creditor, that the creditors would not object to a discharge being granted. A YEAR FOR THEFT; WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Dias De Silva, a foreigner, was sentenced to-day to one year’s imprisonment on charges of theft of jewellery valued at £3OO. Accused was a traveller for Noah Cohen and pawned goods entrusted to his care. He said the cause of his trouble was drinking and gambling. COMMERCIAL COMBINE. At a meeting of the Commercial Travellers’ Association on Saturday night it was decided to form a New Zealand Commercial Travellers’ and Association. Mr Tewsley .presiding, said that the united body would form a strong combination in bringing about a better condition of things and tend to raise the. of travellers. The committee of the Wellington Association was directed to take immediate steps to carry out the necessary preliminary details. It was stated that Auckland strongly approved of the scheme, and the hope was expressed that the Dunedin Association would soon see it to its interest to join in. FOUR MONTHS’ HARD LABOR. DUNEDIN, Dec. 20. Thomas Harcourt, who in 1906 pleaded guilty to theft of partnership moneys at Invercargill, and was admitted to probation, was charged this morning that out of £7O he was ordered to pay the had paid only £l7. The judge said he was not satisfied accused had made an earnest effort id pay the sums ordered, and sentenced him to four months’ hard labor.
