TEACHERS IN TRADE.
A COMPLAINT FROM THE COUNTRY. The question of whether or not teachers should be allowed to engage in other work than teaching for “a consideration” was the subject of some cora- ' ment at a recent meeting of the Auckland Board of Education. The point arose over a complaint made against a country teacher, to the effect that he had built a photographic studio on the school ground, in which he took photographs for “a reward,” and it was contended that this interfered with his work. The Chairman said .personal complaint had been made to him that this particular., teacher had quite a lot of other property, boardinghouses, etc., but he had not taken very much notice at the time. However, it did concern the Board that a building (assuming the letter was correct) had been erected on the Board’s property, and that business was done there. He thought the Board should ask the teacher the nature of the building, and whether he carried on busines s as a .photographer. Personally, he considered it was a piece of impudence for teachers to erect shops on the Board’s property, and compete in business with outsiders. He would suggest, if it were found to be a fact that.thi* “shop” had been erected on the Board’s property, that the teacher concerned, be asked to remove the building within 48 hours. However, in the meantime he moved that the matter be deferred pending an explanation from-...the .teacher as to what the building on the ground was, and what it was used for. This motion was carried.
