PATHE PICTURES
There was an exceptionally good attendance at HiS Alajesty’s Theatre last evening, when the change of programme was presented. The new programme abounds with, excellent pictures of all kinds. The first picture, “The Alagician of Benares,” showed realistically the wonderful feats that are performed in. the East. “For Honor’s Sake,”a fine dramatic study followed, and was loudly applauded.' The other pictures were spun off without a hitch. “The Clown’s Christmas Eve” was a pathetic study of the life of a clown and liis family, and the happy ending was greatly appreciated. A picture of great interest is “The International Balloon Contest, 1909, at Hurliugham,” taken by the courtesy of the Aero Club. The mammoth balloons are shown ascending, and then a picture is presented taken from a balloon, of the streets of London, far below, with vehicles and pedestrians appearing as if belonging to a lilliputian kingdom. “Joan of Arc,” pourtraying the well-known tragic story of the Alaid of Orleans, was well presented, all the incidents shown being most realistic. One of the best pictures ever shown in Gisborne was entitled “The Alakiug of a Dreadnought Gun.” This had been taken by* permission of Sir W. G. Armstrong, 'Whitworth Ltd.,, at Elswick, Newcastle-on-iVne. The first scene is the melting of the pig iron and the subsequent making into steel. The barrel of the great gun and the mechanism of the breech are shown in the making, till at length the deadly 12in. gun is ready, and a trial shot is fired. Two fine colored pictures were shown, “Cupid’s Four Darts” and “Colombo and its Environs.” “The Children of the Plains,” an American dramatic film, vividly set forth the life of the early pioneers in the “Far West.” The comics in this programme are extremely good, being “How the Bulldog Paid the Rent,” “Patent Glue,” “A Cheap Entertainment,” and “Cohen at Coney Island.” This and to-morrow evening the pictures will be again presented.
