The first day of the Manawatu races was held to-day in fine weather. There was a good attendance, and £6494 was put through the machine, against £7930 last year. Bookmakers’ fees totalled £3l 10s, an increase over last year of £2l. The following were the results of the racing:— Highden Hack Hurdles, 1$ miles.— Moose 10.9 1, Windage 9.7 2 Himitangi 9*o 3. Also started: Full Ory ? Don Carlos, and Taupo. Won by half a length. Time, 2min 47sec. . \ Maiden Hack Race, 7 furlongs.—Pe Otane 7.13 1, Polymorphous 7.7 2, Captain 7.7 3. Palmerston North Stakes, 6 furlongs. —Lord Soult 9.3 1, Penates 9.1 2, Flitaway 8.9 3. Also started: Sea Queen. True Shot, Formedon, Sir Solo, and Winning Post. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 13 2-ssec. Tiritea Hurdles. 2 miles—Maidi 10.13 1, Whatakura 9.j0 2, Staybov 10.5 3. Also started: Feu de Joie. Won by half a length. Time, 3min 37 2-ssec. Terrace Hack Welter, 1 mile.—Marton 8.1 1, Koran 9.11 2, Rangikapua 8.0 3. Also started: Captain Bell, Passive, Marathon, and Separator. Won comfortably. INQUIRIES INTO ALLEGED INCONSISTENT RUNNING. PALMERSTON N., Dee. 23. An exhaustive inquiry was held tonight* as to the running of Equitas,. Oliver up, in the Summer Handicap. The stewards were unable to decide tonight, and adjourned the inquiry till Monday morning on the course, with the object of permitting the persons connected therewith supplying further necessary evidence regarding speculation. The owner of Elm got also lodged a complaint against R. Young, who rode Flingot in the Summer Handicap. This will also he dealt with on Monday. HAWKE’S BAY ACCEPTANCES. NAPIER, Dec. 23.
