Thousands of admirers of W. Clark Russell, that famous author of sea tales will re-echo the wish of “New York Shiping Illustrated,” which in a recent issue hoped “that before that prince of sea-story writers retires from the channels of authorship, he will crown his literary labors with a history of the sailing ship, or if this task is to be too comprehensive to he undertaken, that he will at least revise or re-write liis former work “The Ship.” Being a -seaman and navigator during the days when the windjammer was in the height of its glory, and; having that rare combination of practical and technical knowledge of his subject, with a vein of sentiment and romance, and the ability to express both’, in charming and instructive English—having done so times innumerable in a manner seldom equalled and never excelled by any other writer of the sea —Mr. Russell might well act on the suggestion. In doing so, he would add to that fame he has so justly earned—fame which has spread to the ends of the earth and wherever men have sailed the seven seas —and leave behind him a monument of great value that would endure through all time. The task should not be left, to.compilers,.but to one who has experienced, seen, and felt all that a sympathetic history of the sailing ship would imply. And who is more fit for that task than W. Clark Russell?”
