WIDESPREAD DEVASTATION.' United I'nKBB Association —Copyright: BERNE, Dec. 26. Widespread damage has been caused in Switzerland bv storms. BRUSSELS, Dec. 26. The overflow of the river Seine has caused serious floods in Belgium. Many factories are ceasing work. MADRID, Dec. 26. Torrential rains have fallen in Spain and Portugal. The ‘ floods in Castile were unequalled for 50 years. They destroyed bridges and ruined, crops, devastating whole districts. Portuguese railway communication is almost at a standstill. A storm at Oporto swept away vessels from their moorings. They grounded on the sandbanks, and their crews abandoned them. The river Douro has risen 40 feet. (Received December 27, 10.5 p.m.) MADRID, Dec. 27. The rivers in Spain and Portugal have subsided. Several villages in the Valencia and Zamora districts were devastated. ' Six men, including the captain, were drowned aboard the German steamer Cintra, which was wrecked In the Douro during the storm.
