Mrs. Maria Bowen, who died recently at Wanganui, aged seventy-four years, was well-known amongst tho early settlers of Wellington. She arrived there with her late father. Mr. George J. Whitely, shipwright, in the ship Martha Ridgeway, in 1840. After a residence of twelve years in Wellington with her parents, on the death of her father she •removed to Lyttelton, where Mrs Whitley became the hostess of the. Saxon hotel Mrs. Bowen settled with her husband at'Kaiapoi, where her husband died in 1882. Subsequently she resided in -Christchurch, Petone and Wellington. The deceased leaves a family of four sons and seven ■- daughters: Messrs. William Bowen, of Christchurch ; Mr. Al,bert Bowen, of Wanganui.; Mr. Archibald Bowen, of Waitara; Mr. C. Bowen, of Sydney; Mesdames J., Blackburn, and M. Wheeler, of Christchurch ; Mesdames Pulleybank and Coulston. of Wanganui: Mrs. M. Adams, of Masterton; Mrs. K.'
