FIRE AT ROTORUA. (PlCli PuiCNH AHSOCIATIrtN. 1 ROTOj.vu.si.' A fire bro'ke out last night in Goodson Bros.’ goods shed. A number of horses in stalls underneath were supposed to have been taken out, but one was found to be badly burned about the face, and another, left throughout the fire, was uninjured. Two firemen and a stranger got on the roof of a lean-to, winch fell in. r The stranger, Grievson, broke his neck. Fireman Chilton had a leg broken and suffered internal injuries. No one bad been in the building since Saturday. The Goodsons are heavy losers, as largo quantities of goods were stored in’ the the building. WAIROA’S HOLIDAY. WAIIIOA, Dec. 28. Terrific gales and rain storms spoiled the holiday. The wind blew with hurricane force. Trees were uprooted and fences buckled, Tons of fruit were destroyed. The rivers are in high flood. It has been the worst weather for 25 years. A dead horse, saddled and bridled, came down the river, but no one is reported missing so far; Tho stock losses are not so heavy as anticipated. The' recreation ground being under water, the sports wore put off' until .Thursday next. ECCLESIASTICAL APPOINTMENTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 28. Bishop Julius has made the following appointments: Yon. Archdeacon Charles HiUgrove Gosset, at present Archdeacon of Akaroa, to he Archdeacon of Christchurch, in place of Von. Aichdeaeon Averill, Bi.shop-elect of Wainpu : Rev. Harold Ensor, at present of Phillipstown, to be Archdeacon of Akaroa. The Bishop having decided to attach an honorary canonry of the Cathedral to the office of head of the upper department of Christ College, the Rev. Charles Walter Carrington has been appointed an honorary canon of the Cathedral. Archdeacon Gosset, , Archdeacon Ensor. and Canon Carrington will be instituted to their office in, the Cathedral at evensong on Thursday next. CANTERBURY COLLEGE GOVERNORS. Mr. H. I). A eland has been elected to the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, vice Dr. Moorhouse, resigned. A BIG SLUICING RETURN. DUNEDIN, Dec. 28. Mutch Bros., at Gow’s Creek, Waikaia, obtained 400 ounces of gold for twelve week’s work at their sluicing claim.
