THE MOTU FATALITY

An inquest .was held at Motu yesterday upon the body of the man found dead beyond Motu on Christmas Day. His name was Thomas Reid, a painter, of Opotiki, and when found the body was in a very decomposed state. The jury returned a verdict of death through a revolver shot, apparently self inflicted. The occupants of the gig were uninjured. FOUND DEAD. PAHIATUA, Dec. 28. A man named Scrimshaw, aged about 63, was found dead outside the library hall at Mangatainoka last night. A superficial examination of the body disclosed a wound on the bead, but whether it was received as the result of foul play or of an accidental fall there is nothing at present to show. TRAGIC END OF TWO YOUNG GIRLS. STRATFORD, Dec. 28. Jessie Burgess, aged 21, and Ada Cheer, aged 18, were sitting on the bank of the Mangaehu river, near the Toko road, when both slipped into the river and were drowned. KILLED ON THE RAKANOA. WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. A foreman ganger named' O’Brien, formerly employed by the Union ComSany, fell down the hold of the steamer Lakanoa at Taranaki Street wharf this morning and was killed. SUDDEN DEATH. IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 28. George Pincr, aged 66 years, a resident of Sydenham, fell dead yesterday afternoon in the street, while out walking with liis -daughter. At the inquest the medical evidence was that the symptoms pointed to heart disease, and a verdict was returned accordingly. Piper, who had a family of nine, was a brickmaker by trade. .* SUICIDE AT LITTLE RIVER. A telegram received by the Inspector of Police here states that a farmer at Little River, named John Foley, had committed suicide, by shooting himself.. Foley, who was 60 years of age, is stated to have been mentally depressed for some time. FATAL FALL FROM A HORSE. A man named Thomas Breading, about 30 years of age, was found lying dead on the Mead Road, near Rakaia, this morning. It is believed that he fell from his horse and sustained injuries to which he succumbed. ..
