Queensland lias discovered a wood for butter boxes, which, is declared to be eminently suitable for the Queensland white pine—though - it; -is not stated whether it is equal to New Zealand white pine. However, the Queensland butter, which beat all other Australian butters in the recent London Dairv Show, was packed in it. The Queensland people are offering to supply Victorian dairymen with boxes in the shook, made from their timber at Is o£d per box. It appears that Queensland dairymen were being charged Is 6d a box, but threatening to establish co-operative box-making—like the dairymen of Taranaki have done—they succeeded in securing supplies at Is Oid per box, using the id profit for a co-operative fund. Some of the principal factories in Victoria have arranged to use Queensland white pine boxes. If these are as successful as it is declared they are, they will no doubt soon come into general use in Australia, as they are considerably cheaper at the price ouoted than are boxes made from New Zealand white pine. It is to be hoped the Queensland white pine is a satisfactory substitute for the white pine of this country, as New Zealanders can ill afford to spare a timber of which they have not sufficient for their own requirements.
