BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council av.p.s held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Maynard, Clayton, Harris, Pettie, Smith, and Somervell. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Kirk. , . . .. Cr. Collins, who was present at the commencement, Avas compelled to leaA*e owing to a telephone call. CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the CtJsmopolitan Club wrote asking permission for his committee to erect a culvert in front of the club house, and asking that, u possible, the Council’s staff should carry out the work, the club to defray the cost.—The- .request was granted, the Avork to be done by the Council’s staff, at the club’s expense. Mr. E. H. Mann, solicitor, wrote stating that his gig, with two ladies m it was upset and badly damaged on the 21st inst., in consequence of a collision Avith the borough water-cart, the ladies being thrown out and incurring risk of serious injury. He stated that if hi- information as to the Avant or consideration shown on the part of the driver was correct, he would hold the Council liable for the damage. Notification Avas given that possibly a more formal claim would be made next month. —It Avas decided to refer the matter to the Overseer for a report. The secretary of the Gisborne Gas Company wrote informing the Council that the contract entered into to supply 5000 gallons of tar at 3d per gallon Avas concluded at the end of lastmonth, and that the price Avould be as before, namely 4d per gallon.—Received. Messrs F. J- Wilkes, E. H. Williams, and D. Peach, on behalf of ratepayers, Avrote draAving the Council’s attention to the state of the footpath in Gladstone Road, on the left hand side, past the intersection of Roebuck Road. —It- was decided that the Overseer do Avhat he can to remedy the grievance. Mr. J. Lomas, Chief Inspector of Factories, forwarded a circular notifying the Council that it was necessary to fix a day for the weekly hair-holiday in the borough, and stating that the Minister Avould have to fix a day, if one Avas not- decided on, before February 10. —It was decided to deal with the matter at the next- meeting of the Council. Mr. G. Grant, surveyor, wrote notifying the Council that he had altered the permanent levels of parts of Derby and Aberdeen Streets, and enclosed alterations for the Council’s approval. He also stated that he understood he was at- liberty to take the material required for the raising of Temple Street- from Derby Street, between Temple Street and* Aberdeen Road, so as to approximately reduce Derby Street to the altered permanent level. —Received. The Clerk of the Cook County Council wrote enclosing a copy of a series of objections sent- by the Council to His Excellency the Governor, in the matter of the Borough Council's proposal to construct a bridge across the Waimata River, connecting Maclean and Hurahura Streets, in the Borough of Gisborne, and to charge one-half of the cost to the County Council. The Mayor stated that as regards the Russell Street site, engineers declared it unsuitable. The county was unable to use the present bridge all day, and,there Avas no objection to a swing bridge if the County Council desired it, only it would increase the cost of contributions. The amount of the county’s contribution would be fixed liv the Commission. Under the circumstances it would not- be necessary to forward replies to the County Council's objections. REPORTS. —Nightwatcliman's Report.— The niglitwatchman (Mr. W. Fraser) reported that- there had been no outbreaks of fire in the borough since the last meeting of the Council. —lnspector’s Report.— The Inspector (Mr. J. R. Little) reported as follows: “Since last- meeting I have inspected blocks marked on plan No. 1,2, 3,4, 5, 29, Gisborne, and 14, 16, IS, 20, Whataupoko, and find same satisfactory. Since December 15th there has been remoA r ed to the depot 3717 soil pans, which have been washed and sterilised. showing an increase of 72 over last tally. Health report: One ease of enteric feA*er has been notified since your last meeting.”. The report- Avas adopted. * —Overseer's Report.— Mr. M. Morgan, Borough Overseer, reported as follows: “Gentle Annie reserve: The draining of the flat of thi s reserve is completed, and so far appears to be very effective. L have visited the site since the last heaA'y rain, and find the flat practically dry, AA'here before the drain Avas cut the place Avas a bog, it is now hard and dry. Road-making may now be carried on without- difficulty. The heavy rain having caused the river to flood, has again interfered with the AA’orkiug of the gravel pit, and Avill cause some delay in delivering graA el. Our local gas company are somewhatbehind in the repair s of the footway being broken up by them in the laying of the mains, which causes a good deal of inconvenience. The manager complains that the weather has kept him back, and has promised to push on with extra men. Victoria laundry drain, Gladstone Road: The dram complained of in this road ivas cleaned out- in the fall of the year, ivlien all other drains were cleaned. Grass has since grown, and no doubt interferes with, the now of the water.., a little, as the fall m the drain right through is very little. To deepen the drain at this end Avould do no good, as the ivater ivould only lodge in the drain, unless carried right through to the outlet- Avhich would 1 be expensive.” 1 The report was adopted. _ Accounts amounting to £526 16s oc£ Avere passed for payment.
