David Forsyth, solicitor, and a V,'ell-known chess player, was. found dead in his office this morning. There was nothing to indicate the cause of death. COLONEL GORTON. WELLINGTON. Dec. 30. Lieut.-Colonlcl Gorton died at hisresidencc, Bulijs, at 7.30 o’clock to-night after a long and painful illness. His ‘body is to be accorded a military funeral. j

["Lieut.-Colonel Edward Gorton was born at Badiiigkam Rectory. Suffolk, March 4, 1S38; son of Rev. R. Gorton; Married 1563, Nora Mary Stephenson, daughter cf John Stephenson Smith, Crown Lands Commissioner, New Plymouth. Educated Marlborough College, Wiltshire; joined H.M. 29th Regiment as ensign July 29, 1855; served in India and Burmah 1857-59; exchanged as captain to join H.M. 57tli Regiment at New Plymouth 1861-63; extra A.D.C. to Lieut.-General Sir Duncan A. Cameron May 1863; present in that capacity at action of Katikira June 4, 1863 (mentioned in despatches and medal): Major N.Z. Militia, commanding Wellington. Hutt, Wairarapa, and Castlepoint militia districts, July 186365 (had then 1560 men under military training) ;Justice of Peace 1563; promoted to Ifieut.-Colonel N.Z. Militia, and -nninted te command of Wanganui district Sept. 1565-69; had control of" colonial commissariat and transport on West Coast during that period; tookthe field with Colonel Whitmore’s field force as acting Quartermaster-General January-Marcli, 1869; Inspector of Defence Stores of Colony, 1569-71; and of all Government stores, civil and military, 1871-78; resigned office of Inspector of Stores January Ist, IS7S; settled in Rangitikei ; joined John Stevens and established, business of Stevens and Gorton, live-stock auctioneers, 1878-92 ; established present business-, of Qorton and Son, Feilding and ‘Bulls, 1892: twoyears chairman of Bulls Town Board, and one or two years member of Rangiti’koi Road Board; author of “SomeHome Truths re the Maori War--1863-69.” containing interesting historical facts.l !
