THE TURF.

TE KARAKA RACING CLUB

The seventh annual meeting of the Te Karaka Racing Club was held at the Club’s course, Te Karaka, on New Year’s Day. There was a. very large attendance, and the meeting was a most successful one. Unfortunately, several sharp showers fell during the day, somewhat marring the enjoyment of the spectators, but in the intervals the sun slione out brilliantly. With the exception of one or two places the track was in excellent order, and the racing was, on the whole, good. The secretary (Mr. P. J. Set'ton) worked very hard to ensure the success of the meeting. At the conclusion of the “Ladies’ Bracelet” race, the handsome prizes were handed to the nominators of the first and second horses, Miss Parker and Mrs. Malone. The president (Mr. J. A. Caesar) made a few appropriate remarks, and the ladies received their trophies from the hands of the tiny daughter of the president. The fields in the different events were not large, many owners finding a difficulty in securing riders« Seven bookmakers were licensed, and were fairly extensively patronised. The following are the details of the racing:

FLYING HANDICAP, of 25sovs; second horse osovs. Six furlongs: F. Jones’ b f Hirini, .San Remo — Tauhei, 7si. ?lb (McLeod) ••• 1 M. G. Nasmith’s b g Auldearn, San Remo—Opaque, 9.2 (Quinton) ... 2 A. Sharp’s cli g The Squatter, The Possible-Seraph, 8.5 (Banks) ... 3 —Also started: Pluck 8.8 (Manning).

Hirini got clean away at the start, and led from The Squatter, Auldearn, and Pluck in that order along the back. Hirini increased his lead, and Auldearn ran up to and passed The Squatter. Entering the straight Auldearn was making up ground, but his rider tried to come through on the inside, thereby losing ground again, and Hirini won comfortably by two lengths, with The Squatter four lengths away third. Time, lmin 19sec. MAIDEN SCURRY, of 20sovs; second horse 3 sovs. Four furlongs. G. B. Oman’s b g The Chef, San Remo—Lady Cuisine, S.O (Broadfield) 1 T. Anticipation led the way for a furlong, but then relinquished the lead to Baldos, who drew out two lengths clear of Local Option, with The, Squatter in third position. Rounding the home turn the latter moved up, but once into the straight Baldos moved away from the others, and won in the easiest fashion from Local Option, who came with a late run. Anticipation was half the length of the straight away last. Time, lmin 53 l-ssec. ACLAND HOOD HANDICAP, of 40 sovs; second horse ssovs. One and aquarter miles: AI. G. He had a clear lead of a length and a-half entering the straight, but the other pair began to close up, and an exciting finish saw Baldos just get home by a short neck, with Local Option half-a-length away.
