POVERTY BAY CLUB. Tii© usual weekly Committee Meeting was held in the Cosmopolitan Club last evening. It was definitely} decided to commence rowing for the Grieve trophies on the 17th inst. and Messrs R. Jones. J- Stuart and W. Fraser were appointed handicappers. Owing to one or two crews breaking up it was decided to allow J. O’Neill and L. Ensor to row together. Mr Reg. Wilkinson intimated his in_ tention of presenting medals for double sculling and the offer was gratefully accepted. • The crows for these trophies will be picked on the 17th inst.. and the races should take place about the 3'lst. The night of the usual weekly Committee Meetings was altered to Tuesday for the remainder of the season. GISBORNE CLUB. The races foe the Buscke sculling cup ' were commenced last evening when two heats were rowed off. C. Somervell (scr.). beating W. H. Payne (20 secs), and L F. Williams (5 secs) being vic-

torious over A. M. Coleman (17 secs). In each case the winner won very easily. The races will be continued this even, ing. • The double sculling races' for the Grieve medals will also commence this evening at 5 p.m., when the following events will be got off: Payne and Clarkson v. Scott and l Muir ; McConville and Hampton v. G. PI. Puflctt and Wyllie; Daniell and Brownley v. Somervell and Flynn; Quiglev and Fromm v. Tocker and Fraser, •'the crews will, to facilitate the racing,, change boats at the rotunda. Entries for the Buseke fours (A grade) and also for the B grade fours close on January Bth. These events will bo rowed about January 24tli.

TO-DAY’S CONTEST AT WANGANUI

[Per Pitkbs Association.! WANGANUI, Jan. 6. All arrangements are now complcto for the sculling handicap, the first heats of which will be rowed to-mor-row afternoon. Some fine sculling is anticipated, as all the men are_ m good form and the handicaps are said to 1 be just. Interest is being taken in the meeting of Arnst and Felton, who lias I3sccs. ’ start. Felton is Arnst’s equal physically and has fine style. Hagney is also rowing well and is expected to win his heat. It is thought that Mitchell or Green will give Webb a tough job to beat them. The weather is good, but interest in the handicap does not appear to be intense. . A CHALLENGE. NELSON, Jan. 5. T. Lawson, of Ncson, has deposited £lO with the “Colonist” for a sculling match with R. Green, of New South Wales. The match is to take place in Nelson harbor for £25 aside, the distance to be two miles.
