A negro, named Daniels, a notorioously bad character, with a long criminal record, was sentenced xo-day to three months and six months concuirenth* on respective charges of drunken and disorderly behavior and obscene language at the railway AA*liarf. The accused arrived by the steamer from Auckland this morning. SCHOOL GARDENS. FEILDIXG, Jan. 6. The Feilding A. and P. Association school garden competition resulted in a Avin for Colvion. Halcombe second, Cheltenham third. There was a great deal of interest taken in the competition. which was very successful. DEATH DUE TO DROWNING. WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. At the inquest on Neil Millar, Avhose bodv was found in the harbor, the evidence showed that deceased. avlio was a. temperate mail, was last seen alive at ll.l'O p.m. on the 30th December. He was then sober. .In all probability he was unconscious Avhen lie entered the water. Theie Avere bruises on the body, probab-y caused before death. The Land Board to-day passed a resolution, “That the inspection, classification, and subdivision of the pastoral runs in Canterbury and district, whiert revert to the Crown on March 1, 1911, not- having been completed at the time of disposal of the runs on the due date, the Board is of opinion that an extension of time should be granted for classification, the Commissioner to ensure complete and thorough classification of the runs, and that His Excellency the GoA’crnor he recommended to give the present lessees of runs temporary graz_ ing licenses for a period of one year from March 1, 1911’. in terms of section--255 of the Land Act, 1905.” CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Jas. Graham, who on the 21st December took an irritant poison, Avhen he saiv a constable approaching him to serve him wn-K a Avarrant in connection with arrears of a maintenance order, pleaded guilty to-day to a charge of at-. tempting to commit suicide and was ordered to come up for sentence provided he remains in the Salvation Army Home for a month. • A SMART aRREST. A smart capture was effected this evening by Detective Miller, stationed at Lyttelton. About five o’clock word was received in Christchurch that a man wanted' for having forged and uttered a- cheque for £IOO on the Bank of New Zealand at Oamnru, was believed to be attempting to leave by the Sydney steamer. Information was forwarded to Lyttelton with tlio result) that Detective Millor found and arrested the wanted man.
