CHARGING FOR METERS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —A notice has just been issued by the local Gas Company as follows 1 : —“Owing to the small consumption of many meters, notice is hereby given that the lowest charge per month for every meter in use will he 2s from 31st January current.” Now, Sir, I feel sure that you will agree that this new tax is grossly , unfair to nearly all consumers. In the summer time many shops and offices use practically no -gas; this is also'true of many private -houses where>"ga&. is used only for lighting. Under the system which the company liopefe to force- on us, we have to pay for our gas whether we use it or not. It has of course been noticed that during the summer months gas for lighting purposes is not required to any great extent, so the opportunity is being seized on to swell the company’s profits whether the consumer consumes or whether he doesn’t. The company will perhaps reply that the consumer is bound ;to take a supply of gas, but the answer is that th e supply taken must be reasonable, and that it is not reasonable to expect a consumer to burn gas when the sun is shilling. I trust, Sir, that your paper will take this matter up, and not allow the already sorely tried gas consumers to be saddled with this unjust imposition.— I am, etc., CITIZEN.
