The Italian barque Doride, from Marseilles, arrived at "Wellington last week, and presented' quite an interesting sight- as she manoeuvred up the harbour with a large spread of canvas, it being unusual now for a large sailer to come into port without a tow. Captain Francesco Cacace reported leaving Marseilles on August 22, and Gibraltar '••'■as cleared in fifteen days. Good N.E. trade-winds were met with to Cape Verde Islands, and after that a fresh sou’-wester acompanied the vessel for •five days, and then fair S.E. tradewinds carried the Doride down to the Cape. Tlie easting was. run down the fortyt-bird parallel, and heavy weather was* met with throughout, but no ice •or wreckage was seen. She came round the south of New Zealand and the Snares was reached on December 17. Northerly winds were against her up iuc Otago coast, and then S.W. winds to Cape Campbell, which was passed on Christmas Day. She then got the full •force of the southerly gale, and was blown right past Cape Palliser and up to Cape Kidnappers. For the last week eh© was working her way back again, and all hands were glad to reach port •after a rather trying time. The Doride is a steel barque, built in 1891 at St. Hazaire, 0 n the Loire River. Her registered tonnage is 5125 tons. She files the Italian flag, and her principal dimensions -are: Length, 228 feet; - width, 34 feet; depth, 21. feet. She I:'.-ought, a shipment of tiles for Messrs. Briscoe and Co., Ltd., Wellington.
