AUCKLAND WOOL SALE. I’kkss Association. | AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. The second wool sale of the season takes place on "Wednesday, when 63iS bales ox wool will be submitted at auction. Most of the lots coming forward are back-country consignments, and the quality is not so good as the geneiul average oi ; the November offerings. The majoritv of the farmers m and around the Hauraki Gulf disposed of thei'- olios at the first sale ol the season, and* verv little, if any, was passed in. The January sale is usually the occasion for a big offering of backcountry wool, and this year is 110 exception to the rule. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.
WELLINGTON, Jan. 10. Th o High Commissioner cabled from London as follows: There has been a better tone in the mutton market this week, the stock on hand being reduced. The average price of Canterbury mutton is 4fci. The supoly is practicullv exliaust eel. [North Island mutton is at 3J-d. The lamb market is quiet. The stock of New Zealand lamb is small, manv stale carcases being placed on the market. Prices range from 4Jd to 31 d. The beef market is weak and there is little demand. The average price is 3id. forequarters 2RI. There is a better demand for butter. The market is firm with a hardening tendency. Holders are less anxious to sell. The shipment of butter and cheese per s.s. Rimutaka arrived in good condition. New Zealand butter is giving satisfaction to buyers. The average price for choicest New Zealand is 112 s, Australian, Argentine, and Siberian 108 s. Danish 112 s. There is a better demand for cheese, and the market is firmer. New Zealand cheese is giving satisfaction to buyers. The average price of finest white is 565, colored 555. JTlie hemp market is very quiet and nothing doing. Quotations are nominal. New Zealand good fair grade, on spot is at £2B per ton ; fair £27 ; Manila, fair cur. rent £26 10s ; January to March shipments, good fair, £27; fair to X'So ; Manila £25 10s. The stock of New Zealand hemp on hand is 157 tons. The Manila output during the last two weeks was 33,000 bales. The wool mar. ket is firm, prices continue to advance and prospects are favorable. Current Bradford quotations for tops are: Thirty-sixes (low crossbreds) 13R1 per Jb, forties (low crossbreds) 15d; fortyfours (medium crossbreds) 16-kl; fifties (haflbreds) 20Ml; fifty-sixes (quarterbreds) 23d, sixties (merinos) 27d.
