ROWING.

POVERTY BAY ROWING CLUB

Tlie weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Rowing" Club was held last ingCorrespondence was received to the •effect that the new convertible double sculls, being built by Mr. G. Norton, were well under way, and are expected to arrive on the 22nd inst. The selectors have chosen the following ton-stone crew to represent the club at the Wairoa regatta next week: T. McConnell (stroke), T. Parker, E. Whitfield, and M. Sceats. This crew leaves on Sunday morning.

Additional crews were picked for Grieve’s medals, as follows: —H. J. Holschier and Nielson, W. Third and L. Clark, F. G. Peterson and Jas. Weston.

Messrs W. Fraser and J. McConnell were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing week. NOTES. (By “Double Scull.”) Matters in local rowing circles have been somewhat quiet owing to tho holidays. The Poverty Bay shed have crews training for a double scull event, whilst the Gisborne shed managed to get crews for a double and single scull event. The final for the single scull was rowed on Monday evening, when Somervell was victorious over Wheeler-. This proved a very good race, and had Wheeler a little more practice as regards steering he would, with his handicap, probably have won. The race from the bridge down was well worth watching, and both men steered very well indeed. In the double scull event Tocker and Fraser beat G. Puflett and Wyllie very easily for the final. The next event of importance in this shed is the contest for the. valuable Schumacher Cup, and seven crews have entered. Excellent racing should result. There is also an event for “B” grade crews, and six crews have entered.

It is almost time a move was being made to select the “rep” crews, and it is to be hoped both sheds will select their men early, as there is good material available.

The weather at Picton on Now Year’s Day was fine overhead, but the water was so bad that in the senior event one boat filled and another crew had to go ashore and empty their boat; hence all interest in the race was lost. The Council of the N.Z.A.R.A. have decided to be well represented at the championship meeting, and if in their opinion the winners of the Championship Fours prove a very good crew it is almost certain they will be sent to Tasmania.

The Otago Rowing Association held a very successful regatta at Port Chalmers on Boxing Day. It is advisable to remind members of the Gisborne shed that ail must be financial before competing for tlie Schumacher Cup, and that pursuant to the resolution carried at the annual general meeting the entrance fee will be 10s per crew.
