THE ENGLISH MAIL.
DELAYED BY NEWCASTLE STRIKE.
[Per Pukss Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. The late arrival of this week’s English mail is attributed by the postal authorities to the failure of the R.M.S. Orvieto to connect with the express train leaving Adelaide, to catch the Wimmera, which sailed from Sydney for Auckland on Wednesday last. Before the Newcastle strike a special Sunday train was put on to convey the mails from Adelaide, and it connected with the Wednesday’s boat at Sydney, but on account of the curtailed "supply of coal this train was discontinued, and the New Zealand portion of the mail did not arrive at Sydney till last Thursday. The whole of the mail arrived at _ Wellington by the Marama this morning. In consequence of the late arrival of the mail, a number of consignees of cargo by the R.M.S. Ruahine are unable to take delivery of their goods, as the ship arrived four days ahead of the documents. A month or two ago the Kia Ora also “beat the mail” by several days at Auckland, and the vessel waited a couple of days before discharging cargo.
