THE POVERTY BAY PLAYERS. (Special to “Times.”) WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. The day of the pairs matches has come and gone, and the result of the rounds gives the Gisborne folk, especialy the Turanganui Club, an interest in the finals. Of the five pairs representing Poverty Bay, the only pair to do the district credit were a A. Sawyer and Nasmith (skip), for in their section they tied with Wilson’s (Carlton) and Dali’s (Wellington) pair, with three wins and one loss. They easily disposed of King (Stratford) and Tait (Hawera). and, after a splendid game, defeated the famous St. 'John’s pair, Gordon and Lomas, by four points. Wilson had far and away the best of liis game against Nasmith who, with his (partner, was clean off in this game. In the other tliree games they played solidly. Martin and Hird, Witty and Miller, Ponsford and Eure, and Craig and Robertson came out with about an equal number of wins and losses. The Hon. J. Carroll was present on the Wellington green, and “barracked” strongly for Nasmith’s pair. “Show St. John’s what Turanganui can do,” he would say. “Turanganui every time.” The St. John’s pair had vanquished tihe Hon. J. A. Millar and his partner, “the downfall of the Ministry,” as he termed it, and he desired “Truganini” to overcome Lomas and uphold his (Mr. . Carroll’s) constituency ; and they did it. Lomas lay two to tie on the second last head, but Nasmith with a drive took both out clean and scored three, and victory. At last night’s meeting of bowlers Mr. Pettie spoke strongly in .favor of holding the champion fours at Gisborne next year, and invited the Association to hold the tournament in that district, but the general opinion was in favor of the open-door policy, and Gis. borne’s offer was declined with regret in favor of Auckland. To-morrow evening a. smoke concert takes »place in the Town Hall.
