PAHIATUA RACES

The second day of the Pahiatua races was held in weather avhich was all that could be desired. The course was in good order, and fairly fast. Eleven bookmakers were licensed. The amount put through the totalisator was £3124, making £6139 for the meeting, as compared with £11,747 for last year. The following were the results: Handicap Hack Hurdles, 1-1 miles. — Gold Bird 1, Nightmare 2, Windage 3. All started. Gold Bird jumped well, and won fairly easily. Time, 2min 59 3-ssec.

•Stewards’ Handicap, 6 furlongs.— Purakau 1, To Ru 2, Cyrene 3. All started. A good race, heads only separating the placed horses. Time, limin 17 4-osec.

Newmarket Hack Handicap, 5 furlongs.—Splash 1, Amaru 2, 'Conquestina 3. Scratched : Liquid Air. Won very easily at the finish. Time, lmin 4 2-5 sec.

Mangahao Welter Handicap, 1 mile. —Chasemab 1, Debonnaire 2, Ampliianser 3. Scratched: Pukewai. The winner led all the way, and won fairly easily.- Time, lmin 44 2-ssec. Racing Club Handicap. 1 anile 1 furlong.—Milan 1, Adria 2, Mataari 3. Also started: Parable. Won by a length. Time, lmin 55 l-ssec. Makuri Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs. —Pukewai 1, Liquid Air 2, Rose Herald 3. Also started: Blend. A fine race, but Pukewai was .going easily at the finish. Time, lmin 16 l-ssec. Maiden Hack Scurry, 5 furlongs.— Miss Sylvia. 1, Bernardine 2, Leapuke 3. Alf started. A great race, a length between first and and third a length away. Time, Imm 5 l-ssec. Grandstand Welter Handicap, 1 mile. —Aberration 1, -Gyrene 2, Midian 3. All started. Astraea got badly left. Cyrene led till the .horses went down the straight. Aberration, hard ridden, got up and won by a head. Time, lmin 42 4-ssec.

The stewards of the Manawatu Racing Club after holding a long and exhaustive inquiry into the running of Equitas in the Summer Handicap on the first day of 1 the Manawatu Christmas meeting” passed resolutions to the effect that, after hearing further evidence from the owner and his explanation wit lit regard to betting, the Equitas in. quiry, so far as it concerns the owner, be not further proceeded with. The stewards are not satisfied that Oliver pnlled Equitas with the intention of preventing her winning the race. The evidence disclosed that Oliver, the jockey, rode an ill judged race, pulling the filly back at- a- critical time, but the stable and those interested had backed her heavily to win and had givdn instructions to the jockey to ride a waiting race.
