PROSPECTS IN CANTERBURY
Interviewed upon his return to Wellington, the Hon. D. Bucldo stated that the prospects from a farming point of view had rarely been brighter din Canterbury. The dry weather in South Canterbury (he said) had not so tar affected the crops. A few showers would, however, be of great help to farming .interests there. Mid and North Canterbury were looking .at their very best. The wheat crops were promising, and despite the change done by wind and caterpillar pest oats would be ,a good average crop. Rape and turnips were also coming ahead well. Taken all round, there was plenty of feed of all kinds. Live stock, continued Mr. Buddo, was in good condition throughout the whole of the province, with the exception that, owing to' the wet weather last month, fat lambs Avere not ‘ ‘going-off” as fast as usual. Still, the last two weeks of fine weather would have been found to be beneficial. There was some discontent in vicav of the loav prices of late for lambs, the difference from the average of previous years being about 3s per head. It was gratifying to note, by a recent cable from London, that prospects in this connection Avere improving. Dairy cattle Avere looking well. In regard to trade, Mr. Buddo said that retailers were experiencing .good business throughout Canterbury. It was noticeable that there iyas now more demand for a few lines, e.g.. hardware, which ■had not been in such great request during the previous six months.
