Mr. G. D. Portus, advance rei>resentative of the famous Russian wrestler, Hackenschmidt, who is to appear in Gisborne on January 2-fth and 2oth, arrived from Auckland yesterday to make arrangements for the season. The Rev."'Father Lane intends to leave Gisborne on Sunday next, for Auckland, via the Main Trunk, in order to attend the annual retreat of the Roman Catholic clergy of the Auckland diocese.

Mr. W. Devery, who has just completed a nine months’ tour, during which he visited London, Italy, Egypt, and the Holy Land, returned to Gisborne on Saturday. Mr. C. A. deLautour returned to Gisborne yesterday afternoon by the s.s. Waiwera. after attending the conference in Wellington in connection, with the slaughtermen’s demands.
