HONORING A MAGISTRATE
[Pun Piters Association:! AUCKLAND, Jan. 17. A representative public meeting today decided to present Mr H. W. Nortlicroft, S.M., on the occasion oi retirement, with a nublic testimonial in recognition of tlio soldierly ability, uprightness and 'unwavering integrity displayed by him durum the past fifty years as soldier, gold mines warden, and stipendiary magistrate.
A PRESENTATION. PORTRAIT. NAPIER. Jan. 17. Mr. J. B. Fielder, Registrar of the Diocese of Waiapu, was to-day .presented with his portrait in oils, in recognition of bis long and faithful services to the 'Anglican Church. He has consented to the picture being hung in the Cathedral vestry. A CHARGE DISMISSED. Joseph O'Connell, laborer, of Port Aliuriri, was to-day charged on remand with attenuating to commit suicide. A constable deposed that O’Connell had a few words with his wife, and then ran off and jumped into the water at the Iron Pot. In reply to a Question, the constable sa : d that lie did not think O’Connell intended to commit suicide, as he saw him swimming about. The charge was dismissed. A FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD “INFANT.” WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. A bookmaker, Thomas Miilcahv. for betting with an “infant,” a hoy of 15 years of age, was sentenced at the Magistrate’s Court to one months’ imprisonment. RAILWAYS AND ROADS. The Cabinet to-day authorised votes of £25.950 for railways and £1456 for roads. FIRE AT BLENHEIM. BLENHEIM, Jan, 17. A fire at half-past 2 this morning totally destroyed a nine roomed house in Stevenson Street, owned by Mrs. Mac Kay, and occupied by George Weldon Only Weldon was| home at the time, his wife and children being away. Nothing was saved, Weldon having to escape through a window. The insurance on tile building was £4OO in the Standard, on the furniture £l5O in the North British. Weldon estimates his loss at £2OO. NELSON IN A BAD WAY. NELSON, Jan. 17. Air Hay, C.E., of Dunedin, is now in town reporting on the Nelson drainage construction, an outcome of the Healtli Department’s strictures. The water question is very acute. The" supply is deemed shorter than the actual requirements. There are many complaints from the high levels. After to-day street watering and garden hosing will cease temporarily. The weather is cloudy, and early rain is hoped for. ALLEGED BREACH OF BOOTMAKERS’ AWARD. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 17. The Inspector of Factories proceeded against Skelton, Frostick and Co., claiming £2O for an alleged breach of the Bootmakers’ Award in having failed to pay wages to certain female employees on the A. and P. show day, and the following Saturday. It was submitted that their wages had to be computed weekly and not by the hour. Mr Frostick replied that whilst one clause or the Award provided that an employer is not released lrom the payment, of wages for holidays, under the Factories Act it was not incumbent ou them to pay for holidays not mentioned in that Act If they had unpaid apprentices they would have committed a. breach of the award. He produced a statement showing that the employees had to work overtime for two weeks prior to the holidays and that it cost the. firm £l2 more than if the .holidays were not given.
