Mr. Walter Long, in a speech at Stratford, declared that Lord Lansdowne’s letter meant that Unionists regarded old age pensions as part of a settled policy, but intended to introduce a contributory- system which would provide- for the disabled, also for pensions at an earlier age than 70. MR. WILL CROOK® BACK. , Mr. Will Crooks, who hurriedly returned from his colonial tour to take part in the election contest, received an ovation at Woolwich. He declared that he brought from Canada and A us- 1 tralasia a message of hope to the world regarding the solidarity of labor. Mr Will Crooks, at Woolwich, declared that the people of New South Wales complained bitterly of the 5 per cent, tariff, under which the price of commodities had been raised 15 per cent. He added: “All colonials repudiate with scorn aiid derision any suggestion to give them preference.” - THE GOVERNMENT’S NAVAL POLICY. Sir Edward Grey, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in a speech, at Newcastle, declared that “the Navy shall be kept at its proper strength. Eight new ships will be built this year.” DEMONSTRATION AGAINST HOME RULE. There was a great hut orderly Unionist demonstration by one hundred thousand persons held in Liverpool against Home Rule being granted to Ireland. ELECTION RESULTS. ELECTED UNOPPOSED. The returns published above show that 39 Unionists, 35 Liberals and Laborites, and 9 Irish Nationalists were returned. Added to the figures previously received, the numbers returned are:— Unionists 83 Liberals 77 Nationalists ... ... 14 Altogether 174 members have been returned. The total number of members in the House of Commons is 670. At the last general election 512 Ministerialists (including 84 Irish Nationalists) and ,158 Oppositionists (Unionists) were returned. [The London “Times” points out that the Government’s present majority is 334. To be defeated they must, lose 168 seats. For the Tories really to hold power they must win 200 seats. In the election of 1900 they had a majority of 134, and in 1895 they had a majority of 152. The smallest majority of recent years was the Liberal majority of forty in the 1892 election.]
