FIRE AT ICARANGHAPE ROAD. ri’Elt J’ItUHH AHSOtJIATION.'I I AUCKLAND. Jan. 18. i A fire broke ont in Kanangahape Road. Newton, last night, in a shop occupied - by Messrs Dawson Bros., linen merchants. The ,fire brigade extinguished the' outbreak, but not before the shop was gutted. All the stock was destroyed by fire and water. There was no one on the promises at the time of the outbreak, and it is not known whether there was any insurance. ADMINISTRATION OF DEFENCE DEPARTMENT. Mr. Vernon Reid, member' for Bay of Islands lias initiated an agitation the object of which is to induce the Government to constitute a Royal Commission to inquire into the control of the Dominion forces. A telegram signed by Messrs. Reid, Baume, Poole, Glover, and Poland, M.P.’s, was despatched to-day to the Prime- Minister, asks, in view of the early operation of the ! Defence Act. that an exhaustive inquiry should be held by the Royal Commission into all matters pertaining to administration generally by the executive officers of the Defence Department. THE STEAMER CLAN MACFAR LANE. NAPIER, Jan. LS.' The steamer Clan MacFarlane, which left here on Sunday, cleared for London, not Dunkirk, as at first reported. It is stated that at the last moment it was decided to send Iter (to Londondirect to catch the March sales. Her wool for Dunkirk will probably be transhipped at London. Napier cathedral organist. Mr. Horace Baker, of Adelaide, lias been appointed organist and choirmaster of Napier Cathedral. PROGRESS IN WANGANUI. WANGANUI, Jan. 18. Permits for buildings to the, value of £48,423 were issued last.quarter. The tram returns for December totalled £BO7, the number of .passengers carried being 115,0G5. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. WELLINGTON, Jan. IS. David Henry Tobin, a married wharf laborer, aged 37, -shot himself with a revolver this evening, the bullet entering his head, where it still remains. The unfortunate man ha s been in illhealth, and only left the hospital last Sunday. He was again admitted last night. At present the probable result of the wound cannot be ascertained by the medical authorities. BOILING DOWN WORKS BURNED. CAMBRIDGE. Jan. 18. Webb's boiling down works have been destroyed by fire.' with a large quantity of tallow. There was no insurance and nothing was saved of the building or plant. CAMBRIDGE MAYORAL CONTEST. The contest for the Mayoralty is creating much interest. Messrs Geo. Dickinson and E. J. Wilkinson are mentioned as probable candidates. Mr. M. F. Buckland, the present mayor, is not seeking re-election. NEW PADDLE STEAMER FOR LAKE WAKATIPU. DUNEDIN. Jan. 18. Mr. H. Mcßae, naval architect, is at present drawing plans and specifications. at the instance of the Minister for Marine, for a new steamer for Lake Wakatipu, for the purpose of calling tenders.' Prices will be obtained in New Zealand on the plans. These will lie compared with Home tenders: if favorable, it may be anticipated that the boat will he ordered in New Zealand. Plans will be- ready ‘in about a month to provide for a middle steamer 'of about 250 tons, capable of carrying 800 to 1000 passengers and 40 tons of cargo, with: 0 sneer] of 15 miles an hour.
