BOWLING.

RETURN OF REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS. With the exception of Messrs Robertson, Witty, and H. Martin, who journeyed to Auckland via the Alain ‘Trunk* route, the Gisborne bowlers who attended the recent tournament in Wellington arrived here yesterday morning. Chatting to a “Times” reporter, Air. W. Pettie, .president of the Gisborne Club, said that the tournament had been a most successful one in every way, and the visiting bowlers •had been .most hospitably treated. 'Considering everything, he thought that both the Gisborne and Turanganui players had acquitted themselves with credit, although meeting with most success in non-tournaanent games. He visited most of the "Wellington greens, and, noticed that in almost everv case they were very fast and tame. Referring to the “open-door'"’ policy. Air. Pettie said that it was pretty generally favored by the majority of the bowlers present at a meeting held to discuss the subject. He personally advocaetd the adoption of the policy bi-ennially in order that the smaller centres might have a chance to have the tournaments held there, hut the opinion of the majority was a different one. As mattars stand at present the smaller centres are debarred, as only Auckland and "Wellington are able to accommodate the large crowd of bowlers that participate in the tournaments under the “open-door” system. There was, however, concluded Air. Pettie, a feeling amongst many bonders that after a year or two the old order of things might be reverted to, and he had hopes „.of seeing a tournament held in Gisborne before' very long.
