ANGLICAN MISSIONARY MEETING.
SOME NOTABLE SPEECHES
ri’Kit Phebs Association.! WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. Over three thousand people attended the mission meeting in the Town Hall in connection with the Anglican General Synod. Bishop Julius (Christchurch) presided, and spoke of missionary work as the primary duty of the Church. He advocated taking time in foreign missions. Ramming the 39 Articles down the throats of the heathen merely gave them spiritual indigestion. Mr. George Coates urged the case of the Melanesian mission, with which ho was formerly connected. The work, he said, was extraordinarily difficult, but wonderful progress was being made. The Rev. Canon McMurray (Auckland) spoke on the subject of the Maori missions. The native race of New' Zealand. he said, was well worth saving, and must be held sacred. The claim of home missions was advanced by the Rev. E. Iv. Mules (Otira) and Bishop Neligan (Auckland). Mr. Mules made >a forcible and telling speech on the subject of the paganism which, he claimed to be rife in the Dominion. Thousands of children, he said, were growing up in New Zealand absolute heathens, and, so far as finer souls’ welfare was concerned, in darkness. If this was the case in the cities, and amongst the intellectual sections of the community 7, what must it be in places never even visited by a clergyman Two great vices t gambling and drink, were ruining New Zealand’s workers. They must be fought tooth and nail. They could nob be met by Act of Parliament, but only by +hc grace of God through the home) missionary.
