AMERICANS ABSTAIN FROM MEAT AS PROTEST AGAINST HIGH PRICES. Unitkd Prkss Association— Copyright. (Received January 22, 12.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 21. Believing that the shortage in cattle in the stock-raising States is not wholly responsible for dear beef, 11,000 heads of families at Cleveland pedged themselves to abstain from meat for 60 days. The labor unions lielped to forward the boycott, which -within a few days spread throughout ' the Mississippi Valley. The price of meat in Cleveland has already declined. The boycotters now exhort the (people not to ]iay beyond 30 cents '(l s 3d) per dozen for eggs on the ground that cold storage supplies are being withheld. LONDON, Jan.. 21. The “Times” New Yoi J k cor-respon-dent says that the high cost of living is attributed by economists to the world’s increasing field production, the evactions of trusts, nrctection and the demands of labor. Whatever the causes it occasions much discontent, and President Taft and Congress are exercised over the question. Possibly Congress may investigate it.
