At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday a young man named Eberhardt Ferdinand Renner was committed for trial on a charge of setting fire to a house at Wadestown on‘the night of December 28th last. .

The orchard division of the Department of Agriculture has received word from the ’below-mentioned districts as to the effect of the recent heavy weather on the fruit prospects. In most cases it will be seen from the appended information no material damage has been caused. Auckland North, no sen. ous damage done; Auckland South, crop not seriously affected; Hawkes’ Bay and Wellington East, crop not materially affected, prospects excellent both for quantity and quality; Wellington West and Taranaki, considerable damage done round Wanganui, only slight damage done elsewhere; Nelson, early fruit suffered slightly, main crop of apples and pears not damaged to any extent; Marlborough, no serious damage done; Canterbury and Westland, vc-ry slight damage done; Otago and Southland, fruit not injuriously affected, fruit smaller and ripening earlier than usual.

LAKE COLERIDGE POWER SCHEME. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 21. CIVIL SERVANTS AS HORTICULTURISTS.

At a meeting of the Civil Servants to consider the advisability of forming a horticultural society a resolution affirming the desirability of forming a society, having for its object holding of exhibitions of flowers, fruit, and vegetables, was carried. It- was resolved that persons who are in the employ of the New Zealand Government in any capacity should be eligible as members or exhibitors. Mr. P. S. Stevens (Chief Postmaster) was elected President, Messrs. Shanks and Piraiu as joint lion, secretaries pro tern, and Mr. L. C. Williams lion, treasurer. Should the anticipated support be accorded it is proposed to hold the firstshow about the end of February.
