TURANGANUI CLUB

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Turanganui Bowling Club was held in the Royal Hotel last- evening, there being present- Messrs W. Bruce (president), J. R. Williams, J. D. Jeune, M. G. Nasmith, junr, and W. 0. Sheet (secretary). A letter was received from the Gisborne Club relative to the trophy presented to that club by Mr. Burton for competition among the Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay bowling clubs. An expression of opinion was asked for as to tlie best method of holding the competition. After a full discussion it was resolved—“ That this committee favors the formation of a centre, and that Mr. Burton’s trophy be competed for at the centre tournament, the first competition to take place in Gisborne, and that details as to the formation of a centre and the future conduct of such, tournaments be discussed during the first tournament.”

Mr. J. D. Jeune presented a pennant to the club for competition between the “B” grades of the Turanganui and Gisborne clubs. The pennant bears the design of a rooster —“the cock of the walk.” A committee was appointed to lay the proposal before the Gisborne Club and arrange details. The matter of the second inter-club match in the “A”/ grade between the two local clubs was brought up, and it was resolved that the secretary use his best endeavors to arrange the match for Thursday next on the Turanganui green. It was resolved to appoint Mr. Thel-wa-11, junr., as caretaker of the club’s property on a month’s trial, in view of the recent resignation of the club’s greenkeeper. The final of the singles was reached, Stevenson (Taieri) heating Harraway (Dunedin) by 20 to 18. Fruish (Clinton) 18 beat Miller (Southland) for third " place. In the rinks the final is nearly finished, only seven heads remaining to be played. At present Nortli-End, Invercargill (Service) is leading Rcslyn (Wedderspoon) -by 13 to 12. Caledo lian ■(Smith) take third place, Unite.l, Christchurch (Brown) fourth, and Taieri (Mclntyre) fifth. The tournament will be concluded to-morrow. TESTING THE BOWLS. Fairfield (McLachlan, skip), and Dunedin (Gillies, skip), 16 to 13, decided the winner of" the Caledonian section bowling tournament. A protest was entered against Fairfield for playing straight bowls. The tester, Mr W. A. Scott, who tried the bowls, refused to pass four of the eight. The executive committee tlierupon disqualified Fairfield. On tlie Dunedin players being declared the winners of the section, they withdrew from the contest, explaining that their protest was merely lodged as a matter of principle.
